Delve into Penrith’s sporting past with the Library’s 2020 Penrith History Calendar. Calendars are available at all three Library branches and the Nepean Family Historical Society from December for $10.
Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Olympic Games in September. Crowds lined the streets of Penrith for the Olympic torch relay and attended the rowing at the Sydney International Regatta Centre and whitewater events at Penrith Whitewater Stadium. The Paralympic Games would follow a month after, with the torch relay passing through Penrith on 13 October 2000.
In 1982, the Nepean River hosted the first ever Nepean Triathlon in January, which would become the oldest triathlon in Australia. 4,000 swimmers took to the river in the bid to be crowned the first ever men’s and women’s winner.
Visit important locations like Jamison Park in the 1900s, 1950s, and 1990s, and see how they’ve transformed and grown throughout the years.
The photos included in the calendar are from the Library’s photographic collection, available for viewing in the Penrith City Library’s Research Room from 2pm to 5pm. The collection is part of a wider historical catalogue of local history.
The collection is available to be accessed via Penrith City Library’s catalogue. To view this at home, visit library.penrith.city and click on Penrith in Pictures.
