Penrith City Council is delivering a multi-million-dollar upgrade to transform Cook Park into a high-quality sport and recreation precinct.

The development of Cook Park is critical to the strategic transformation of St Marys and the Penrith Local Government Area. It was prioritised as a major project in the Penrith Sport and Recreation Strategy.

Upgraded football facilities are a key feature of the project including a new synthetic playing surface, resurfacing three additional fields with natural turf, a new amenities building, grandstand refurbishment, floodlighting, pathway connections and seating.

The precinct will be further improved with Bill Ball Oval playing surface and sporting infrastructure upgrades, more car parking, playspace upgrades, pathway connections, lighting, new public toilets, tree planting, and landscaping. New toilets will also be constructed including Changing Places facilities.

This project is funded through the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program and the Australian Government's Priority Community Infrastructure Program, in partnership with Council.

As part of the Penrith Sport and Recreation Strategy, almost $4.2 million is being invested in the upgrade of The Kingsway Sports Precinct in Werrington.

These upgrades will transform the precinct into one of the highest quality multi-purpose sporting facilities in Penrith with 23 touch football & Oztag fields, four cricket pitches, four rugby league fields, LED floodlighting, irrigation and amenities for community users, schools and sports groups at a local, district and state level.

Playing Surface and Car Park Upgrades

Penrith City Council is improving field playing surfaces and car park drainage at The Kingsway in Werrington.

Car Park: The drainage upgrade will direct rainwater on the carpark surface away from the sports fields. This should help reduce return to play times after wet weather events. The project includes installing an asphalt swale along the eastern edge of the car park. Works are anticipated to be completed by January 2025.

Playing surface upgrades: Fields 15-18 will be transformed with Couch grass, enhancing the playing surfaces bringing them up to the same standard as adjacent fields. Couch grass is durable and more suited to sports field usage which will improve recovery times after rain, allowing sports activities to resume sooner. Fields 15-18 will be fenced off during the work and will remain closed until April 2025.

This project is being funded by Penrith City Council and the NSW Government through The Essential Community Sports Asset Program.

The Kingsway North - Irrigation and Turf Upgrades

In early 2024 vital upgrades to the turf and irrigation system were completed. A new irrigation system across 17 fields was installed as well as the completion of a two-year turf sprigging program, where the turf and soil has been converted to Couch grass across 9 fields. These improvements will boost safety, playing performance, and turf management for the precinct, benefitting local and state sport groups.

This project was proudly co-funded by the Australian Government, the NSW Government and Penrith City Council.

The Kingsway North - New amenities building

Construction is underway on a new amenities building. The facility will provide modern, inclusive amenities for athletes, residents, and sports officials. The new building will include:

  • accessible toilets

  • bathroom facilities with showers

  • officials' change rooms

  • designated first aid area
  • increased storage space

  • improved administration and canteen functionality

  • accessible paths, landscaping and tree planting.
