Penrith City Council joins Zero Barriers Project

Earlier this year, Penrith City Council became a member of the Zero Barriers Project. Council is proud to join 12 Councils in New South Wales who have committed to reducing barriers for people with disability and their families.

Zero Barriers is a free business and service support project that aims to eliminate barriers for people with disabilities when shopping, using services, or participating in activities in their local communities. Council has engaged over 70 local businesses to date, with 15 joining the program so far, and many more registering their interest.

1 in 5 Australians live with disability, making people with disability, their families and carers a significant part of our Penrith community. There are endless benefits that can bring value to your business when access and inclusion are front of mind. Disposable income for working-aged people with disabilities and their carers contributes about $13 trillion to the economy globally, not to mention their friends, relatives, and larger networks who may feel loyalty toward inclusive businesses.

The Zero Barriers Business Excellence Awards recognise businesses and services that have made an exceptional commitment to be more accessible and inclusive of their whole community. NSW business or service winners are chosen for the categories of Social Access and Inclusion, Physical Access and Inclusion, Communication and Marketing and Inclusive Employer. Businesses can self-nominate or be nominated by a community member.

Independent of Council's membership, I-Fly World Penrith signed up to Zero Barriers and in 2022 won the Inclusive Communication and Marketing award from the Multicultural Network Zero Barriers Business Excellence Awards. Council is proud to see a local business introducing changes to be more inclusive and looks forward to more businesses getting involved.
