Thousands celebrate the opening of Gipps Street Recreation Precinct

The official opening of the 32-hectare Gipps Street Recreation Precinct heralds a significant milestone for Penrith.

The Precinct is not only a celebration of community growth, it’s also a catalyst for long-term economic benefits for the region.

This multi-million-dollar facility, with state-of-the-art sports fields, fitness zones, walking trails, children’s playspaces, picnic and BBQ areas and public artwork accommodates a wide range of recreational activities, competitive events, sports tournaments, and cultural gatherings. With growing interest in health and wellness tourism, the precinct is poised to attract visitors and families from across the region - a key action of the Penrith Visitor Economy Strategy.

Gipps Street Recreation Precinct’s grand opening delighted 7,500 community members and visitors with skateboarding workshops and jam sessions, pump track demonstrations, parkour performances and three-on-three basketball.  Netball, gridiron and touch tag, drop-in sports clinics for all ages and skill levels were on offer as well as lawn games, live music and roving entertainment.

The $44.5 million Gipps Street Recreation Precinct project was proudly funded by Council with the support of the NSW Government, which contributed a combined $13.5 million through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program ($7 million), Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund ($5 million), Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund ($1 million), and the Places to Play Program ($500,000).

Located at 34 Gipps Street, Claremont Meadows, this Precinct represents a unique asset in an increasingly experience-driven economy with rising demand for recreational spaces and health-conscious tourism.
