Casey’s Brewery is one of the local businesses whose products find their way into bottles made by O-I.
“We use the 330ml O-I bottles. My bottle filler was manufactured to use this particular bottle so it was a fortuitious coincidence that O-I is located in Penrith,” Pat Casey, owner of the brewery said.
Mr Casey describes his business as a 1,800 litre packaging brewery. He runs the brewery with the help of his wife and several casual staff members.
Casey’s Brewery produces a core range of 3 beers – a pilsner inspired golden ale, a dark ale and a hopper amber ale – plus specials and seasonals.
They also provide mini kegs and a range of wort kits, a pre-made unfermented grain brew used by home brew enthusiasts.
The wort kits are sold as far afield as Newcastle and Gosford and Casey’s beer can be bought at selected liquor outlets, online or at the brewery cellar door.
At the brewery customers can buy “growlers”, a specialist imported bottle that can be returned for refill.
Casey’s Brewery opened in 2015. The business took off quickly.
“When we first opened we were doing mostly contract work and hosting what are called gypsy brewers – were a brewer comes in and uses our facility to produce their own beer.”
Mr Casey points to growth and change in Penrith as an advantage for his business.
“Increasing levels of education, income and experience are increasing the demand for a wider variety of food and beverages in Penrith,” he said. “You find a lot of residents who grew up here, moved away for education and work and then moved back to raise a family. These people want a wider choice in their home town.”
“Immigration and travel have also led to Australians being exposed to a broader range of tastes and flavours in beer which has kicked off the craft beer trend.”
