The upgrade of the Water Recycling Plant at St Marys has been acknowledged for its sustainable credentials.
The project was awarded Outstanding Sustainability Project at the 2020 Boomtown! 2020 Project of the Year Awards. An initiative of the Western Sydney Leadership dialogue, the awards seek to acknowledge major projects that contribute to the sustainable growth of Greater Western Sydney.
Sydney Water, the organisation behind the project, said in a statement “Australian and NSW first innovations delivered by the upgrade will allow the St Marys plant to generate 70-90% of its operational energy.”
The facility treats over 33 million litres of wastewater each day, servicing 160,000 people. With the region’s growing population, Sydney Water saw the opportunity to improve technology on the site and deliver significant energy savings.
“By 2040, we expect the number of customers in the area to more than double. So, we're introducing new technology to improve biosolids treatment and enable us to use biogas as a renewable energy resource”.
St Marys Water Recycling Plant upgrade has also received an excellent design rating and ten out of ten score for innovation from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).
