Council congratulates Penrith for taking their e-waste to the right place

Penrith City Council congratulates Penrith residents for taking their e-waste to the right place at Council’s recent E-waste Drop-off Day on Saturday 17 September.  

Of the electronic waste collected on the day, Penrith residents successfully diverted almost 12 tonnes from landfill, with Council reporting monitors and TVs being the most popular items dropped off. 
Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen congratulated Penrith residents for doing the right thing. 

“E-waste is growing at three times the rate of any other waste, so it’s crucial that we ensure our electronic items are disposed of correctly and safely, and are taken to the right place,” Cr Hitchen said. 

“It’s essential that we recycle e-waste responsibly rather than send it to landfill. Not only does it take up a huge amount of unnecessary space, but some items’ components can also be toxic to the environment and local wildlife. Most items can be recycled and turned into new products if taken to the right place for disposal, so it’s great that our community participates in this event” Cr Hitchen said. 

The E-waste Drop off Day at the new location at The Kingsway Playing Fields in Werrington was a success, with 451 cars attending. Residents complimented the event, saying it was really well organised, easy to use, and they were attended to quickly, with 82% of participants advising they were happy with the new location. Post codes 2750 and 2747 were the highest in attendance, which were similar to those that attended the previous Jamison Park location. 

Council is encouraging anyone who missed out on the drop-off day, or anyone who may have e-waste, to take it to the Penrith Community Recycling Centre at 96 Dunheved Circuit, St Marys. The Community Recycling Centre, better known as the CRC, is free, open all year round, and accepts most electronic items.
