Collaborative efforts lead to local success

The Western Sydney City Deal is another year into its future-focused agreement – and the great outcomes of this collaboration continue to benefit the Penrith LGA.

Following the release of the City Deal’s Annual Progress Report 2020-2021, Penrith City Council is reflecting on what has been a successful 12 months for our booming region.

From significant planning progress on ground-breaking infrastructure upgrades to construction starting on what will become a riverside jewel for Western Sydney, our City is progressing at some pace.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said Council is proud to work alongside the NSW and Australian Governments, and seven other councils, to shine a light on the importance of Western Sydney and strive to achieve ambitious goals now and in the future.

“It’s a truly exciting time for the Penrith community as we prepare for our biggest transformation,” Cr McKeown said.

“Our local transport system and number of job opportunities will increase as plans continue to evolve for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport rail line, a city-shaping advancement which will join the main Western T1 line at

St Marys to connect residents to the Western Sydney Airport and surrounding Aerotropolis from day one of operations.

“We can see roads being improved, re-routed and constructed between our CBD and the Aerotropolis and this will pave the way for future development - the beauty of this is new infrastructure will be in place to support our existing and future communities.

“Council’s long-term vision for vibrant, accessible green spaces has also been realised in the final designs for Regatta Park, a $24 million project being jointly funded through the City Deal’s Liveability Program, and with funding from Council.

“City-shaping projects such as this are proof of what can be achieved for communities when all levels of government work together and Council is grateful for the ongoing support.”

Construction has started along the Nepean River at Regatta Park, which will attract residents young and old as well as visitors through the delivery of outstanding features such as over-water viewing platforms, a 112-metre pavilion, covered play spaces incorporating water activities, new amenities, and a carpark.

Council looks forward to further successes being achieved through the City Deal across various sectors, including education and housing.

The $11 billion Western Sydney City Deal was created in 2018. Council signed on to the 20-year deal in favour of its overarching aim to create connected, sustainable and liveable communities.
