Drains are just for rain

Penrith Council is working with business operators in the Dunheved Industrial Estate to help keep our river and creeks clean.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said he hoped the program would identify potential stormwater pollution problems and help businesses understand their role before any damage is done to our waterways.

"When it comes to water pollution, prevention is definitely better than cure," Cr Fowler said. "Without the proper precautions in place, when it rains, stormwater can carry all types of materials into our creeks and rivers, endangering aquatic plants and animals."

Business owners have a legal responsibility to ensure they do not pollute our waterways. Fines can apply if water pollution occurs.

"Council is committed to caring for our waterways and we know the majority of industrial businesses in our city work hard to manage their stormwater," Cr Fowler said." Our aim is to highlight why it is so important to protect our rivers and creeks and make sure business owners and staff are aware of their responsibilities and know how to carry them out."
