As part of NSW Grandparents Day celebrations, Penrith City Council will again host a free family friendly event to recognise the important role grandparents and older people play in Penrith's communities.
This year the celebration will be held at Parker Reserve and will include a variety of activities for all ages to enjoy, such as NSW Cricket's backyard cricket games, billy cart racing, damper making, kids crochet, jumping castle, art with nature Aboriginal craft, sack races, a free BBQ burger lunch and more!
"Grandparents Day is not only a fantastic day out for the whole family, it's also and a great way for grandparents and older people to be recognised for their invaluable contributions to our families, volunteer organisations and the broader community," said Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM.
"Grandparents Day is a great way for kids and young people to learn about older people in our community and their experiences as well as being a celebration all family members can enjoy.
"I love the billy cart racing where kids race the carts they have built with volunteers from the Nepean Men's Shed - it's a great example of how we can bring the young and old together in a really fun way," Cr Fowler said.
Grandparents Day is one of the many ways Council continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting inclusive communities that value and recognise people's contributions and is an opportunity to stop and appreciate the people who make a difference in our lives.
"I'd encourage everyone to think about the older people making a difference in their lives and invite them along to Grandparents Day."
Grandparents Day celebrations will run from 10am-2pm on Sunday 28 October at Parker Street Reserve and will include a free BBQ lunch with vegetarian options. Coffee will also be available for purchase.
Children racing on the day will need to wear long pants and sleeves and bring a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads (there may be some spares on the day for those who don't have their own).
