High Street has a new vibe

Penrith’s oldest shopping strip – High Street – is rejuvenated and Penrith City Council wants residents to come and explore what’s in store.

“The renovation is a significant investment in the city and we thank the traders for their patience,” said Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM.

“Now we want the Penrith community to come along and experience what’s on offer.

“There is a diverse range of eateries and entertainment venues, as well as speciality shops and professional services.

“Council strongly supports the city’s traders – that’s why it’s invested in High Street by giving it a facelift,” Cr Fowler said.

Penrith CBD Corporation Chairman, Darren Latty, said the transformation has made High Street more user friendly.

“In the past the pathways were narrow and the pavement uneven.

“Now it’s completed we can already see an increase in people’s confidence in being able to move around the CBD more easily.”

Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce President Simon Gould said the decision by Council to undertake a comprehensive makeover of High Street is a wonderful boost for the city’s retail sector.

“It’s about creating a space that the retailers themselves can activate and attract customers.

“There are a lot of people who want to come back to High Street – it’s a space now that’s going to take us forward,” Mr Gould said.

The High Street Upgrade streetscape design incorporates environmental and social sustainability, neighbourhood character, positive aesthetics and increased usability and safety.

The works are part of the Council’s City Centre Public Domain Master Plan and demonstrates Council’s ongoing commitment to support Penrith’s economy and boost the visual amenity and attractiveness of the Penrith city centre.
