Penrith is set to host the 2019 International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) Youth Goalball World Cup next month, and will become the first city in Australasia to host the sporting event.
Goalball athletes from 16 countries, including Australia, will compete in the week-long series of events at The Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre from 2-9 August 2019.
The event is expected to attract 200 competitors, referees and volunteers as well as 3000 spectators across the week, bringing a significant economic boost and international exposure to Penrith.
Penrith Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler OAM said Penrith City Council was proud to be partnering with Blind Sports NSW to bring this event to Penrith.
“Penrith is the first choice for major sporting events and we’re proud to be supporting and promoting accessible sports as the host of the IBSA Goalball Youth World Cup,” Cr Fowler said.
“This event will showcase the incredible talents of young Goalball athletes from all over the world and is sure to deliver all the nail-biting moments our local spectators have come to expect from these world-class sporting competitions.”
“If you’re looking for a fun, affordable, family-friendly outing then this is it. I encourage everyone to go along and support the young competitors and be part of all the excitement of this thrilling sporting event.”
