Now is the time to spring clean your backyard and swimming pool – for safety’s sake.
Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said pool fences fail when they're not maintained, when gates are faulty or when climbable objects are left nearby.
"With the hot weather with us it's imperative to do a home pool safety checklist," Cr McKeown said.
"Pool owners need to check that all fence panels are securely attached, that gates close automatically and there are no rusted, loose or missing screws. Check every panel and gate, it won't take more than 15 minutes.
"Just as importantly, all climbable objects like chairs, pot plants, BBQs, shrubs, rocks and toys should not be kept near pool fences. Children can use these things to climb into pool areas."
All pools and spas, including those that are portable and inflatable, which hold 30cm or more of water need to be fenced with safety barriers that meet the Australian standards.
"By being proactive, you can help stop the risk of drownings and the devastating injuries that can occur to children who nearly drown," Cr McKeown said.
To help carry out a self assessment of your swimming pool barrier fence comprehensive checklists can be found at swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au/checklists.
