Got chemical waste items you’re looking to get rid of? Label each one, pack them safely into the boot of your vehicle or trailer and bring them to Council’s free Chemical Cleanout event being held at Jamison Park on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March between 9am and 3:30pm. Entrance on the day is via Jamison Road.

Council encourages residents to pack unwanted, out-of-date, or unused chemicals such as car batteries, garden chemicals, fire extinguishers, fluorescent globes and tubes, gas bottles, motor oils, paint and related products, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals and household cleaners into the boot of your cars or trailers for the friendly staff to unload and dispose of safely.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen congratulated Penrith on being a leader in sustainable waste management and actively supporting initiatives that prevent problem waste being sent to landfill.

“I’d like to commend Penrith’s ongoing commitment to recycling problem waste such as chemical waste the right way. Despite the difficult times we have experienced in 2020 and across 2021, it is as important as ever to make sure waste which can be hazardous to the community and the environment is disposed of correctly,” Cr Hitchen said.

“It’s vital that we recycle these items responsibly, which is why Council hosts this event annually to provide residents with an opportunity to safely pack up all the chemical waste they have in their house and garden sheds and bring them to one convenient spot.

“Chemical waste such as household chemicals need to be disposed of correctly to avoid any risks of contaminating our environment and harming our wildlife. This type of waste can’t go into our household bins as it risks injuring our garbage collectors and poses other risks in its potential to cause fires.

“Many of the chemical items collected at this event are actually recycled or reused. Bringing these items down to Jamison Park on that weekend is a great way to not only safely dispose of them, but to assist in Penrith’s resource recovery efforts,” she said.

Council requests residents ensure their chemical waste is labelled and safely packed into the boot of their vehicle. The event only accepts household quantities of chemical waste of up to 20L or 20kg, and up to 100L in 20L containers of paint.

The event will be a contactless event. Council requests residents remain in their vehicle while the friendly team unloads the items from their boot or trailer.

For residents who miss the Chemical CleanOut weekend, Council encourages them to take certain chemical waste items to the Penrith Community Recycling Centre located at Gate 3, 96 Dunheved Circuit, St Marys for free recycling. Items accepted differ to the Chemical CleanOut Event, please check which items are accepted at Penrith.city/CRC.

Fluro lightbulbs and household batteries can be dropped off at the small CRC stations at Council’s libraries located in Penrith, St Marys and St Clair.
