Penrith City Council has launched an art exhibition and video to celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

The exhibition features works created by local residents with disability, and the video, created in partnership with Uniting, documents their creative journey.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown OAM said IDPwD was the perfect opportunity to talk about and celebrate the contributions and achievements of people of all abilities, break down barriers and “see the ability in disability”.

“In previous years, we’ve worked with local disability services to host an event in the Mondo but this year, due to COVID-19 concerns, we coordinated a remote art project,” Cr McKeown said.

A range of residents with disability received “arty, crafty” kits and were inspired by creative tips from local art makers via zoom workshops.

“We know that one in five Australians has a disability, so it is important we do all we can to make Penrith inclusive and accessible,” Cr McKeown said.

“Council’s IDPwD Art Project has brought isolated members of our community together to explore their creativity and learn something new. It’s also given the broader community a chance to celebrate their talents.”
